5 Tips for Bare Minimum Beauty

By Alexandra OwensAllure magazine
Paring down your beauty routine in a time crunch can be painful for even the most Spartan of makeup wearers. But as our parents always told us, life is about choices— deciding if you really have that extra four minutes to meticulously create a cat eye among them.
Recently I was running late (okay, very late) for a party, and was more than a little flustered by the prospect of showing up at a respectable time looking less than respectable. So in my scant five minutes at the mirror, I prioritized based on what I wanted to play up and down. I stuck to my daily skin shtick, applying Neutrogena Age Shield + Repair Anti-Aging Sunblock, Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra, and Stila Illuminating Powder Foundation. Because I'm naturally fair, it’s important for me to stay protected and even. Then I did a rough version of my usual liner (MAC eyeshadow in Haux applied wet) and brushed on Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara in Black. My eyes are easily my favorite feature, so I always give them my attention. Believe me, there is only so much blush and bronzer are going to do for my cheekbones, so I skipped them altogether. After dabbing on a little gloss from my purse, I might not have been as put together as usual, but I was definitely presentable enough for an evening lounging with friends.

Other Allure staffers have their own strategies for a last-minute beauty scramble:

If I’m running late, I’ll skip eyeliner and eyeshadow. I definitely prefer wearing them, but if I’m pressed for time, I can live without eye makeup. Then, I’ll just do concealer, a quick hit of blush, and a swipe of black mascara. — Alyssa Hertzig, contributing executive beauty editor

Because I have no angles on my face, I definitely cannot skip contouring my face. It seems like such an unnecessary step when you’re in a time crunch, but if I don’t swipe Benefit High Beam highlighter on my cheekbones and Dolce & Gabbana blush in Nude on the hollow of my cheeks, I look like I’m still in sixth grade. — Renee Trilivas, editorial assistant

If I’m crunched for time, I focus on my eye makeup. I think it makes the biggest difference...so I’ll skip my normal skin and lip makeup and spend the little time I do have on applying shadow, liner, and mascara.

For me it is all about the hair, a quick fix of eyeliner and mascara, and a spritz of my favorite scent. When I am in a rush there are four things that I reach for— Andre Walker’s Q-Oil, Chanel Le Crayon Kohl in Noir, Dior Show Blackout Mascara, and Saffron James Ipo fragrance… Plus Make Up For Ever Lab Shine in Candy Pink. I can throw them in my bag and apply on my way!
